Our students must absolutely love our songs before we record them!

All of our songs use one or more of the following:

  • finger play

Curriculum Uses

Babies

Activities that babies love to do with our songs include:

  • clap their hands
  • pat a baby sized tambourine
  • shake a small maraca (that is, if you can get it out of their mouth!)
  • bounce on their grown-up's lap to our catchy sing along songs
  • watch their grown-up wave a brightly colored scarf
  • get tickled
  • watch, touch and get kissed on the tummy or toe by a puppet
  • walk, march, run, sway and dance in their grown-up's arms
  • be mesmerized by bubbles
  • gently rock in their grown-up's arms to a quiet lullaby

Ones

One year olds love to do all the Hot Diggity Dog music activities that babies do. Plus, they love to:

  • pat their knees
  • tap the floor
  • shake their hands
  • stomp their feet
  • Kick their feet
  • bounce their knees
  • try jumping
  • walk, march and run as soon as they are able
  • rock on their grown-up's back
  • dance

Instruments that ones play with our songs are:

  • tambourines
  • all types of shakers and maracas
  • hand drums
  • finger cymbals
  • rhythm sticks
  • jingle bells

Props that one year olds enjoy with our songs are:

  • scarves
  • blocks
  • balls
  • bean bags
  • puppets
  • shear canopies to go under
  • parachute (to sit on)

Ones are also able to begin learning classroom concepts such as:

  • start & stop
  • being quiet
  • following instructions
  • waiting for one's turn

Twos

Two year olds enjoy the same Hot Diggity Dog music activities as one year olds, plus they will:

  • gallop
  • jump
  • wiggle their fingers
  • count with their fingers
  • tip toe

Twos play all the instruments that one year olds play. Plus, now that they have hopefully outgrown putting foreign objects in their mouths, twos can play instruments with small mallets, such as:

  • xylophones
  • triangles
  • woodblocks
  • tone blocks
  • guiros
  • drums with mallets
  • resonator bells
  • marimbas

Some two year olds are able to really keep the beat. It is amazing to see this. However, a child that participates in a weekly music class from the age of 12 or 18 months, will most likely be able to keep a steady beat by the time she is somewhere in her twos.

In addition to the props used by one year olds, twos can use:

  • streamers
  • hula hoops
  • felt board
  • parachute over the head
  • leaves, snowflakes and flowers on top of a canopy

Hot Diggity Dog music activities for twos also include:

  • imaginative play
  • sharing
  • being the leader
  • playing a solo
  • music dynamics (loud & soft)
  • tempo changes (slow-med-fast)
  • real sign language

Some two year olds are able to master musical skills such as:

  • naming various instruments
  • naming various body motions (march, walk, run, tip toe)
  • choose a song by themselves
  • handle instruments gently
  • identify music notation symbols (quarter, eighth, half notes and rests)
  • sing and play an instrument simultaneously
  • switch between 2 different instruments in the same song

Lastly, some two year olds are able to begin doing musical activities without their grown-ups. To help them think and act independently, we give each two year old a turn by themselves:

  • at the felt board
  • to demonstrate a body motion
  • to put away their instrument
  • to play a solo

Threes

Three year olds have progressed in their fine and gross motor skills. They can run with more control and use their fingers with more dexterity. Most important of all, they sing!

Hot Diggity Dog music activities for threes are more complex. They include:

  • music notation games
  • switching between 2 or 3 instruments in the same song
  • acting out a song
  • partnering
  • orchestrating a song with small groups playing various instruments
  • listening to a story song and answering questions about plot and characters
  • rhyming songs
  • movement games
  • circle songs
  • helping the teacher in specific tasks

Fours - Kindergarten

This age group has the added advantage of more defined verbal skills. A teacher can easily converse with a four, five or six year old.

Hot Diggity Dog music activities for this age group include:

  • songs with humor
  • songs that include spelling
  • more complex hand motions
  • more complex music theory
  • more challenging orchestrations
  • drawing various instruments and music notation
  • puppet shows
  • musical instrument crafts
  • more advanced circle songs
  • more complex musical games
  • tongue twister songs
  • more advanced sign language

3 Ways to Learn Our Musical Activities

There are 3 ways to learn the various musical activities that accompany our songs.

  1. The most detailed (with illustrations and instructions) is our free activity charts. They contain our most popular finger, hand and body motions.
  2. The the next more specific listing is in the "Curriculum Tools" column for each CD on our sound bites & bits page. This list contains specific rhythm and prop ideas.
  3. The last way is by reading the age specific ideas listed on this web page. Although they are not detailed, they may be able to give you additional ideas.
